First Month of Youtube

Post Based On Video

This post is a non-exact transcript of this video. It’s not exact, but shares the same information.

I heard that Youtube is more a marathon than a sprint. A channel doesn’t tend to grow fast, and you have to be in it for the long run to see things blast off. So I told myself I’d give myself 3 months and see where I am.

One month has already passed. My first video was uploaded on Sept 7 and it’s October now.

Pokemon pack opening I find is a popular, but potentially hard niche if I was comparing myself to top YouTubers like Alex Katchum or Deep Pocket Monster.

And my pockets are not deep; women’s jean pockets suck.

But I also saw the pack openers whose video quality was, well, not what I would be happy with. So, if they could get views, I figured I could, too. My vids aren’t professional quality in any way, and some much worse than I thought they’d be, but I
enjoy figuring things out.

I also needed to give a new perspective that others didn’t. Something I was, or could do, that I didn’t see as much in the community. Well, I’m a mom, so that was an easy
perspective to use, and while it’s a more experimental, I thought about the Story Time animators and the use of an avatar; I didn’t really see that being used.

The mom perspective was easy to work with. It’s my son who got me back into the hobby, and my inner child is loving getting back into the cards. I don’t want the channel to focus too much on the kids, as I want to keep their names and faces out, but being a mom is my life, I can’t hide that on camera.

With the story time avatar, I was originally going to draw them myself, but I wasn’t happy with the quality of work for the amount of time spent. I had this program called Manniquin sitting in my Steam account that I got forever ago when my hobby was game design, and so I decided I’d make an avatar with that.

If the avatar sticks depends on people’s reception of it.

Now, at one point the hardest part about doing the videos was finding product. My town had been scalped clean and there were a few weeks where I just couldn’t find anything. Even a store employee, just as annoyed at the scalpers as I was, told me I missed the product by only a few days.

That alone was making me want to quit.

But then we went to Wallgreens and actually found some Pokemon Tins in the wild.

After that was the release of Mega Evolution. If you’ve watched my rant, you’d know that, while I was able to get some packs, they were gone by that night.

Thankfully, our local card shop, Sunken City Games, told us they were getting some on Friday and that Saturday they were doing a Kid’s Pokemon Day. It was perfect.

More on that in later videos.

But yeah, the great experience we had there, kept me in good spirits. We don’t have a lot of money to spend on cards, but I’ve been able to manage a backlog of content that should get me to mid-late November.

Video analytics wise, I’m still learning what content works, what time to post and I’m enjoying the feature that shows me viewer’s retention. It’s helped me learn how long I can actually keep ya’lls interest, and when just starting out, it seems if I keep them on the shorter side, ya’ll stay better. Also, 10:30 in the morning works better than 7:30.

I actually got over 10 subscribers, and that also has encouraged me to keep going.

There are a handful of people who have basically said ‘I want to see more’. I’ve also have had some positive comments, and it just brings me so much joy to know I made someone’s day just a little bit better.

And I have so many plans for more. The channel is called Mama’s PC Cards not justfor the pack pulls, but because I want to show off my collection and grow it on this channel. I want to start some longer form videos of my binders. I want to collect a full pokedex of cards, but I’m learning some pokemon are more elusive than others, so I can’t just rely on pack pulls. Probably will just buy those outright. Can’t afford no $200 pack of cards from 10 years ago just to chase a card.

Overall, for a first month of me being a nobody in the hobby, I feel pretty good about how it’s going. I’m up to 17 followers, some of my videos have gotten over 1K views, and I’ve gotten engagement with likes and comments. I still have a lot of videos to work on, things to learn about video editing, and how to manage Youtube and social media pages.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the next few months go.

Thanks for giving me chance, God bless, and see ya next time.
